Morocco's windswept Atlantic port — blue boats, ramparts and Gnawa soul
Essaouira is a fortified 18th-century port town 175 km north of Agadir, and the most atmospheric day trip on this stretch of coast. Its UNESCO-listed medina is everything Agadir deliberately is not: sea-sprayed ramparts, blue wooden fishing boats stacked in the harbour, gulls wheeling over the fish auction, and Gnawa music drifting out of workshop doorways.
The drive from Agadir takes about three hours each way along the coastal road, passing argan groves where goats really do climb the trees. Once inside the walls, everything is walkable: the Skala fortifications with their bronze cannons, the carpenters' souk working thuya wood, and a long crescent beach where the trade winds power one of Africa's best kitesurfing scenes.

Essaouira is 175 km / about 3 hours from Agadir by road. A guided day tour with hotel pickup is the practical choice — departures are usually 7:30–8:00 with 4–5 hours in town and stops at argan cooperatives on the way. Self-driving is easy (coastal N1); intercity buses run but eat into your time in the medina.
Year-round. Essaouira is famously breezy — the alizé trade winds blow hardest April–September, which keeps summer temperatures pleasant (rarely above 26°C) but makes the beach better for kitesurfing than sunbathing. For calm, warm wandering, October–March is ideal.
A windbreaker or light layer whatever the season — the wind is constant. Comfortable walking shoes for the medina cobbles, sunscreen, and an appetite: the grilled-sardine stands at the port are the best cheap lunch in Morocco.
