Imouzzer Waterfalls

High-Atlas cascade and palm-grove villages — the cooler twin of Paradise Valley

About Imouzzer Waterfalls

Imouzzer (sometimes called Imouzzer Ida Outanane) is a small Berber town at 1,200 m altitude in the High Atlas, 60 km north-east of Agadir. It's known regionally for two things: a year-round set of waterfalls (Cascades d'Imouzzer) cascading down red-rock cliffs into pools below, and the surrounding palm-grove villages where most homes still produce their own argan oil.

The drive in is half the experience — the road from Tamraght winds up through almond and argan groves, with goat-in-the-trees photo stops and panoramic Atlas views. The waterfalls themselves are at their most dramatic Nov–April; in summer they reduce to a trickle but the pools below stay refreshing.

Best for

  • Combining with Paradise Valley as a full-day loop
  • Argan oil cooperative visit
  • Hiking (1–3 hour walks from the town)
  • Cooler altitude escape from Agadir summer
  • Photographers — red rock + palm grove + cascade

Practical info

How to get there

60 km / 90 min from Agadir via the scenic mountain road through Aourir, Imouzzer Ida Outanane, then the final 5 km to the cascades trailhead. Self-driving is doable if you're comfortable with mountain switchbacks. Tours include hotel pickup.

Best time to visit

November to April for full waterfall flow. May–October the cascade reduces but the pools and the drive remain beautiful. The "Honey Festival" in May/June is a unique time to see traditional beekeeping practices.

What to bring

Sturdy walking shoes (the path to the falls is steep and rocky), swimsuit + towel for the pools, sun protection, cash for the local cooperative shops (they accept cards reluctantly), and patience for the goat-in-trees photo stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions travellers ask us most.

Are the waterfalls flowing all year?
They flow all year but slow to a trickle in dry summers. Best months for full force: November to April. Between May and October you'll see less water but the pools stay cool and swimmable, and the surrounding scenery doesn't change.
Can I combine Imouzzer with Paradise Valley?
Yes — and many travellers do. They're only 35 km apart on the same northbound road. Most full-day tours from Agadir hit Paradise Valley in the morning and Imouzzer in the afternoon, with lunch in between.
Is the goat-in-trees thing real?
Real — and a bit ethically grey. Argan goats genuinely climb the trees to eat the fruit, but in tourist areas farmers sometimes encourage it for tips. Ask your guide which spots are natural vs staged. The honest stops are inland past the second town.
How does Imouzzer compare to Paradise Valley?
Paradise Valley = palm gorge with deep clear swimming pools, easy hike. Imouzzer = mountain town + actual waterfall + argan groves, more "cultural" feel. Imouzzer is at altitude (1,200 m) so it's 5–10°C cooler than Paradise Valley in summer.
