Taghazout

Morocco's laid-back Berber surf village on the Atlantic

About Taghazout

Taghazout is a small fishing village 18 km north of Agadir that became a global surf destination almost by accident — the right-hand point-break at Anchor Point started attracting boards in the 1960s, and word spread.

Today Taghazout balances its Berber roots with a sun-faded backpacker culture: cafés serving avocado toast next to traditional fish tagines, surf shops next to mosques, yoga retreats overlooking the Atlantic. Anchor Point, Killer Point, Boilers and Banana Beach are all within walking or taxi distance.

Practical info

How to get there

Taghazout is 35 km / 40 min north of Agadir Al Massira airport (AGA). We offer fixed-price airport transfers from €40. From Agadir city centre it's 18 km / 25 min by taxi (~150–200 MAD). Local minibus (line 12) runs every 30 min for ~10 MAD.

Best time to visit

September to April for surfing — the swell is most consistent and the water still comfortable in a 3/2 wetsuit. Mid-June to August is hot, calm, and ideal for beginners. Avoid Ramadan if you want peak café availability.

Where to stay

Surf hostels and small guesthouses dominate the village; Sol House Taghazout Bay and Hyatt Place Taghazout sit at the edge for resort comfort. Most surf-camp packages include accommodation, meals, lessons and equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions travellers ask us most.

Is Taghazout safe for solo female travellers?
Yes — Taghazout is one of the safest village in Morocco for solo travellers, female or male. Modest beachwear (cover-up between beach and accommodation) is the cultural norm. Yoga + surf retreats often have majority-female cohorts.
Do I need cash in Taghazout?
Bring some — many smaller cafés, surf hire shops, and the harbour fish-market only take cash. There are 3 ATMs in the village, but they sometimes run out at peak season. Larger places (hotels, dive schools, surf camps) accept cards.
What's the difference between Taghazout and Tamraght?
Tamraght is the next village down the coast (3 km south) — quieter, more residential, slightly cheaper, with Crocs Beach (Banana Beach) for beginners. Taghazout is buzzier with more cafés, more surf schools, and the famous point-breaks.
